Psychosocial Risk Factors at Work - Identification, Analysis, and Prevention

The NOM-035-STPS is a Mexican Official Standard designed to comprehensively address psychosocial risk factors in the workplace. Issued by the Secretariat of Labor and Social Welfare (STPS), this standard aims to recognize and mitigate the impact of psychosocial risks on the health and well-being of employees. Its primary focus lies on the identification, analysis, and prevention of these factors to foster safe and healthy work environments.

These include stress at work, workplace violence, psychological harassment, workload, lack of control over work, and lack of recognition, among others. The standard establishes guidelines for employers to conduct risk assessments, implement preventive measures, and promote an environment that supports the mental and emotional health of workers.

1. Improved Health and Well-being of Workers: By identifying and addressing psychosocial risk factors, the standard contributes to reducing mental and emotional health issues among employees, enhancing their overall quality of life.

2. Increased Productivity: A healthy work environment fosters higher employee engagement and satisfaction, translating into increased productivity and workplace efficiency.

3. Reduced Absenteeism: Preventing and managing psychosocial risks lowers the likelihood of employees being absent from work due to mental health issues, thus reducing absenteeism.

4. Promotion of a Positive Work Climate: Implementing preventive measures contributes to creating a positive work climate characterized by respect, effective communication, and mutual support among team members.

5. Compliance with Regulations: Implementing NOM-035-STPS ensures that companies comply with governmental regulations on occupational health and safety, avoiding potential penalties and promoting corporate responsibility.

6. Enhanced Corporate Image: Companies that prioritize the mental and emotional well-being of their employees demonstrate a commitment to human well-being, potentially improving their reputation and attracting qualified talent.
